The Adams County Justice Center, located within view of Denver International Airport, is the new town center for the county seat, Brighton, Colorado. Since its opening in 1998, Adams County’s unprecedented population growth and increased caseload has rapidly outgrown the first-phase six-story, 200,000 SF facility. With Heery on board for design, the Justice Center Phase II court expansion accommodates these immediate needs and prepares the county for projected growth through the next 10 to 20 years.
Heery conceived the addition for overall visual effect to match the existing building and respond to site, solar, and weather conditions. The new wing angles away from the existing building to preserve views to and from the indoor public areas and allow for future campus development. A relocated in-custody bus transport driveway and garage allow for future master planned areas on the Justice Center’s south campus.
Building features include exterior solar fins and high-performance glass to shade interior spaces and reduce energy usage. Constructed of steel, precast concrete, and glass, the new expansion continues the colors, lines, and shapes found in the original building, making it a seamless addition. The expansion and lobby addition sets the stage for Phase III, when a planned east wing will be added.
