The new 53,000 SF City of Gainesville Public Safety Complex opened on the city's 189th birthday with Gainesville officials and the community in attendance. A long overdue project, the city celebrated new beginnings with a new spacious complex to house the fire, police and court staff.
Heery was selected to provide programming; space needs analysis, and full design-build service for the new Public Safety Complex. The complex is the new home of the police department and municipal courts facilities, including police administration, CID - support services, municipal court and clerk, as well as other departmental and operations spaces. The 26,000 SF stand-alone Fire Station building houses the fire department including offices, residence housing, and a new state-of-the-art slide for fire fighters and a four-engine bay.
The first step in assessing the City of Gainesville’s police department and court needs was to establish a clear and detailed understanding of past and current operations. The Heery team examined and studied historical trends, reviewed organizational and operational patterns, city and census data and established the impact that relevant regulations have on operations. The second step was to translate the city’s operational needs into space requirements and a building program. This information was used to develop a building massing model that architecturally addressed the City’s desired aesthetic for the new Public Safety Complex.
By using design build for the first time, City workers were able to reduce the timeline by overlapping the design and construction of the project. Heery exceeded the Owner’s goals by successfully completing a quality project, on time and under budget with savings returned to the Owner. The citizens of Gainesville are enjoying the ability to have two services under one roof – the municipal court and police department – to better serve the citizens of Gainesville. The fire station is now in a much better location with better accessibility to respond to calls in different areas of the city.
