Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport – Air Cargo Building

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (H-JAIA) handles nearly 90 million passengers and one million takeoffs and landings each year. In 2002, the need for extensive renovations to H-JAIA became apparent, the City of Atlanta Department of Aviation sought out A/E support services. Heery formed a joint venture with two local M/WBE firms to create the Hartsfield Support Services Team (HSST).

As part of the HSST team, Heery was contracted to provide comprehensive design and construction administration services for a new, 128,000 SF Air Cargo building.  The facility included a single story warehouse, a 2-story office core and a 2 story DOA ramp operations center.  Heery provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and structural engineering.

The project’s design is based on previous cargo building concepts modified to achieve 1) LEED Silver Certification, 2) unobstructed 270° view of ramp operations from the ramp operation center and 3) construction cost reduction through a more efficient roof truss system that lowered the overall building height.

Key components of this program include the following:

  • Structural design that accommodates 180’ interior clear spans
  • Packaged DX roof top air handler system with gas pre-heat and electric reheat at VAV terminal boxes
  • New 200 a, 480/270 Volt Georgia Power Electrical service
  • Energy efficient high bay florescent lighting
  • Exterior 1000 watt HPS apron flood lighting
  • Low flow water and energy conservation plumbing fixtures
  • NFPA 13 compliant wet and dry fire suppression system
