Medical Center of the Rockies Hospital and Medical Office Building

Located on a 91-acre campus, the Medical Center of the Rockies (MCR) is a collaboration of two regional health systems—Poudre Valley Health System in Fort Collins, CO and Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, NE—that brings world-class healthcare to Front Range residents of northern Colorado, southern Wyoming and southwestern Nebraska. The 136-bed medical center is designed as a hospital within a hospital and houses the Heart Center of the Rockies and the Trauma Center of the Rockies.

Heery Design served as the architect, programmer and planner for the center, which was designed, constructed and certified as a LEED® Gold hospital. Since its opening in 2007, MCR has received rave reviews for its innovative features from patients, families and hospital staff. In addition to the trauma and heart centers, MCR also has an obstetrics department and well-baby nursery; specialty surgical services; general orthopedics; neurology; radiology department and laboratory; acute-dialysis unit and hyperbaric oxygen treatment center.  An 84,000 SF medical office building, also designed by Heery, is attached to the south wing of the hospital, and a second identical building was completed at the north wing. The campus is master planned to accommodate up to 400 total inpatient beds with supporting ancillary services.

In order to meet the critical deadline of opening on the same day as the adjacent MCR Hospital project, Heery took a proactive approach with the Medical Office Building. During design, the palette of available options for finishes and fixtures were narrowed to those which were available with short lead times, and which met the budget constraints up front. Heery met with the owner and contractor on a weekly basis so communication remained open and any schedule issue was quickly resolved. During construction, Heery insisted on scheduling specific walkthroughs with the tenant/end users at certain milestones to help tenants visualize the end product during the construction in order to minimize design changes that could potentially delay the project finish date.
