On June 24, 2017, Her VOICE presented the 4th Annual STEP into Your Future Girls Conference for approximately 85 girls from grades 5 through college age. STEP – Sisters Together for an Empowering Purpose – is an annual conference and educational program with Her VOICE mentors, who are survivors of domestic violence, and distinguished community educators serving as facilitators of classes for the girls. Topics pertinent to this age group touched upon the impact of social media, sobering suicide statistics were highlighted, lively discussions on dating and the lie of beauty as portrayed by advertising and business was debunked. What is beautiful and the impossible standards that young women go to gain approval were illustrated. Subject: Are you becoming who you want to be? If not, what are you doing to get there? The conference concluded with each girl creating her own vision board and stepping into her future with the STEP Motto. The vision board symbolized her answer to who do you want to be and where do you want to go.
Assistance was provided with a grant from the Heery International Foundation. Construction Manager Rosemary Grant represented Heery at the conference which was held at Houston Community College West Loop Campus.
