Intercontinental Exchange, Inc.

Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) is the leading network of regulated exchanges and clearinghouses for financial and commodity markets. ICE owns and operates 23 regulated exchanges and marketplaces including the New York Stock Exchange. The new corporate headquarters in Atlanta houses ICE business operations which are central to the functioning of the financial markets in the United States and internationally.

Turner & Townsend Heery provided architectural, interior and engineering design services for ICE’s new, 14-story office renovation. The design needed to convey stability and tradition, while demonstrating a leading technological edge. The juxtaposition of these two ideas drove the development of the overall aesthetic, balancing marble and woods with sleek modern materials throughout the executive offices as well as supplementary offices for accounting, programmers, and developers. Additional space includes a 24-hour help desk, conference and training rooms, fitness, cafeteria and sundry shop. The 25 year old existing building required infrastructure improvements, parking deck repairs, improved site circulation and secure access. The interior fit-up was a complete renovation for most areas with ICE ultimately occupying the entire building.

The client wanted to create a “smart” interior, one that supports the nature of the company and is designed to support and improve work and tasks customized to meet the needs of their different program requirements. In order to foster continued innovation in its delivery of reliable and accessible data, technology, and risk management services around the world, the client needed a design that focused on collaboration. The solution required creating “hubs” of social settings and work venues to encourage interaction. All of this work was completed while existing tenants remained in place.

The new space was recognized for Design Excellence by the American Society of Interior Design (ASID), Georgia Chapter, winning Bronze and Silver respectfully under the Corporate Contract category. In addition, ASID Georgia Chapter recognized ICE under the Product Design category for Faceted Tables. As the new owner of the New York Stock Exchange, ICE required a space that aesthetically conveyed the stability and tradition of that institution while also demonstrating their own technological edge. The design of the prefunction tables within the conference center, is a physical representation of their corporate identity. Multi-faceted elements, reinforce their place as a nimble “disrupter” in the realm of commodities exchanges and international finance. Concurrently, the cool color palette, fluidity of form and reflective planar surfaces, compliments the corporate acronym, ICE, a concise statement of the company’s goals and mission statement.
