Social Security Administration Headquarters

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has been headquartered in Woodlawn, MD for more than 55 years. However, since it was built in 1959, the agency has seen no major renovations or system upgrades to the main operations building. With 12,000 employees, the SSA headquarters is Baltimore County's largest employer, therefore major upgrades that address health and safety is an important step moving forward in renovating the building.

In 2013, the General Services Administration (GSA) selected Heery to continue providing on-site construction management services to the SSA under an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity contract. The Heery team manages a variety of renovation and campus improvement projects ranging from minor repairs and alterations to substantial infrastructure and office renovations and relocations up to $15 million in cost. Security, life safety and energy upgrades represent many of the projects. Heery coordinates all members of the project team including the client, the user, the architect/ engineers, as well as the construction contractors. The work is being completed in occupied facilities requiring a high degree of user communication and coordination and often requires Heery’s services at night and on the weekends to minimize disruption to SSA’s personnel. SSA’s extensive requirements for work and shutdown notifications present coordination challenges and includes continuous proactive planning on behalf of Heery.

The campus consists of 11 buildings containing approximately 3.24 million SF serving 12,000 employees.
