Mercy Philadelphia Hospital broke ground on the renovation and expansion of its emergency department. On February 22, CBRE | Heery’s healthcare design group joined elected officials, hospital leadership and the West Philadelphia community to celebrate this significant milestone.
With a volume of over 58,000 patients a year, the new Emergency Department will enable the hospital to serve its growing community in a new spacious setting with the latest technology and amenities.
The addition and renovation of the Mercy Philadelphia Emergency Department displays Trinity Health and Mercy Health System’s commitment to the residents of West Philadelphia. This project will double the size of the hospital’s existing ED, helping Mercy Philadelphia to increase capacity and improve patient privacy and comfort.
Designed by CBRE | Heery, the project includes a phased expansion of the existing ED infrastructure. CBRE | Heery Project Architect J.C. Castner was a member of the project team that built the original ED more than 25 years ago, which was designed with this future expansion in mind.
“As the designer on the original Emergency Department, it is personally gratifying to have the opportunity to complete this new addition that we had envisioned in the original design,” Castner said.
The new ED doubles the number of exam and treatment rooms, and provides a new ambulance entrance and trauma bay services. The design also provides a new flexible suite of fast-track exam rooms to provide express care for non-acute patients. The project is scheduled for completion in 2019.
For nearly 100 years, Mercy Hospital Philadelphia has served Philadelphia’s West and Southwest neighborhoods. It has since grown into a 157-bed community teaching hospital. This expansion marks the largest investment to the hospital's emergency department since its original construction in 1996.
