Oak Ridge National Laboratories - East Campus Complex

Heery provided master planning, architectural, engineering, interior design and construction management for two separate, but related projects at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The first was the new 388,000 SF East Campus Development. This facility houses one of the world’s largest, fastest “super-computers” and provides Class A offices for the computing program personnel as well as a separate engineering technology and research laboratory. The project is LEED Certified; the Department of Energy’s first LEED Certified project.

Heery was subsequently selected to provide design / build services for the New Multi-Program Research Facility. This facility includes approximately 218,279 SF office, laboratory and computer space and was certified LEED Gold.

Key components of this project include the following:

  • Used a first-of-its-kind process for a federal laboratory that taps into a third party to design, construct and maintain the facilities
  • Included sustainable design features such as low pollution lighting, permeable asphalt and self-irrigating landscape incorporating native plants
  • Achieved LEED certification on the East Campus Development, the first State of Tennessee and U.S. Department of Energy facility to receive such designation

“Heery went to a great deal of trouble to provide facility amenities and a human touch as opposed to being institutional. The Department of Energy couldn’t be more delighted.”
