Founded in 1952 The University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, is an academic medical center serves South Florida, South America and the Caribbean in education, research, patient care and community service. The facility has more than one million patient encounters annually and the school continues to see tremendous growth in its already tremendous client base. To meet the growing needs of health care services, a plan to include more space for laboratories was implemented.
Heery’s Portland office provided commissioning activities on a new, nine-story, 188,000 SF research facility to provide world-leading, state-of-the-art, wet-lab research space, core laboratories, vivariums, conference space, and offices. Heery provided technical review of all electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and life safety system documentation and drawings. Commissioning specifications and a commissioning plan were developed and integrated into the contract documents. This project achieved LEED Silver Certification from the USGBC, including optional credits awarded for Enhanced Commissioning.
Construction phase commissioning services included ongoing system inspections and installation verification, pre-start checks, start up, functional performance testing, and training of the operation personnel. Warranty phase services were also provided, validating performance of the building’s mechanical and electrical systems through the first year of occupation. The success of this project has led to a continued relationship with the University of Miami, where Heery has successfully commissioned numerous projects over the past 10 years.
