Abingdon Elementary School celebrates newly-renovated facility

Earlier this month, the Abingdon Elementary School community celebrated their newly-renovated school with an official ribbon cutting ceremony. The event featured music from the Abingdon Elementary School band and chorus with guest speakers from Arlington Public School Board and the Arlington County Board.  CBRE | Heery was recognized for its work in guiding the construction process to a successful completion.

The school, located in Fairlington, VA features 27,000 square feet of additions that include a new three-story Classroom Wing and Gym and 78,000 square feet of renovations to the existing school. All the work was phased, occupied and completed in 24 months.

“For the event, the 5th grade students assembled a video of their favorite architectural elements with a narrative from many of the students who have seen the construction from start to finish,” explained Renee Adams Cooper, CBRE | Heery Construction Project Manager. “Their perception of the new spaces was a true testament to the design and the execution by the construction team. “

CBRE | Heery provided preconstruction and construction management services for Abingdon Elementary School’s renovation and expansion. This project included nine phases and was constructed while the school was fully occupied and operational. The school underwent a complete renovation of the existing school, added a new gymnasium and three-story classroom building along with completed two minor additions that include a kitchen and main entrance. A temporary gymnasium and 14 portable classrooms were set up on site to accommodate the students during the renovations, and a temporary parking lot was  constructed to serve the school staff during the renovation of the existing parking lot.

The school’s expansion is part of the School Board’s FY2015-FY 2024 Capital Improvement Plan, which was adopted in 2014 to accommodate the area’s increasing enrollment.  Abingdon Elementary was completed in 1950 and expanded in 1964, 1970 and 1990. The newest additions will allow for 136 more students, bringing the total building capacity from 589 students to 725.
