Poudre Valley Hospital, in northern Colorado, is known to be the region’s leading cancer treatment and care center. When it comes to new medical technology and treatment, Poudre Valley Hospital has the full potential to design a tailored care plan to treat each patient’s cancer condition. With the large increase of patients and cancer awareness, the University of Colorado Health System (UCH) needed to take action and expand the Poudre Valley Hospital Cancer Center.
Heery was able to demonstrate to UCH that renovation and expansion to the existing facility could provide significant cost advantages without disrupting patient care. To accomplish this, the $10.7 million, 44,390 SF project was built in three phases to allow the cancer center to remain operational throughout construction. The first phase consisted of a 4,400 SF renovation of the existing radiation oncology suite, including a second linear accelerator and CT simulation scanner. The second phase included construction of a 32,150 SF, two-story addition and interior renovation highlighted by a new lobby and entrance, along with a Main Street pedestrian corridor that links to the existing lobby, oncology departments in the existing wing, and an exterior healing garden. The final phase, a 7,840 SF renovation in the existing wing, adds a nutritional center, physical rehabilitation, alternative medicine therapies and a flexible conference center.
The cancer center’s medical infusion area, which dominates the addition’s second floor, provides a comfortable space for chemotherapy and other infusion-based treatments. Many infusion chairs are in a central community area, while individual spaces and private rooms are available around the room’s perimeter. A pair of symmetrical balconies integrates into the infusion center, providing patients and families a short-term passive area away from treatment. Large glass windows on all three sides flood the infusion area with natural light and provide patients and families with panoramic views. Poudre Valley Hospital and Heery’s goal was to create a warm and welcoming place for cancer patients.
Poudre Valley Hospital will continue to be the region’s leading cancer treatment facility that will have a huge impact the communities it serves.
